Zola's promise: 'We'll make it into Europe'

LONDON, England - West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola has wasted little time in making predictions for the upcoming season by declaring that his charges will reach a European competition this season.

"We will make a European competition this season, I have no doubts that we can," said the 42-year-old ex-Chelsea striker, who has recently taken the reigns at the East London club.

"We have a good mix of both young players and experienced ones. I think that if we get off to a good start in the league, and keep our heads the rest of the way through, we can reach the UEFA Cup, or even better, the Champions League."

Zola is already looking towards the Hammers' future, with several promising youngsters such as Bálint Bajner coming through the ranks. However, the club is is desperate need of reinforcements - West Ham have only one left back, and virtually no experienced deputies for oft-injured strikers Craig Bellamy and Dean Ashton.

Upon being confronted with the issue by a reporter, Zola commented that the club was "doing all it can" to bring in more attacking options and also hinted at the sort of players he wanted to sign during the transfer window.

"I've already made my decision on who to sign, and I've been promised full cooperation from Björgólfur [Guðmundsson]; he's going to give me everything I need for this project to get off the ground. As for the players themselves...they're quite skillful, both inside and outside the box, overall very hard-working players. I think that if we manage to sign them, they will bring both balance and depth to West Ham. Those two things are key; without a balanced squad we won't be able to sustain any good form for long. Hopefully, if all goes well, we can bring them on board."
